Ten years after their last record was released, Saosin — one of my absolute favourite bands on the planet — have returned with a fiercely triumphant new single, ‘Starting Over Again’. Despite the inner depth of its powerful lyrics, the title alone suggests the page is being turned on a fresh chapter for the outfit, with Cove Reber back at the vocal helm.
Since 2006, their riotous, anthemic songs have soundtracked various pivotal moments for me, and, after being away travelling for a short while, the timing of this banger feels personally appropriate once more. It’s angsty in the main, yet catchy in all the core places, and the unity of every texture and layer is spot on. These guys don’t know how to miss a goal. Fact. The yearning, roared vocals against the thrumming bass, ear-rupturing drums and searing, metallic guitars? The formula cannot — and has not — been tainted. A hunger for more is simply the result of their recent studio stint.
I’m still yet to see these dudes live, but I very much hope that could change this year. In the interim, long may a rollout of sensational singles continue from Saosin. Warm welcomes ensue…
