Loud, raw and unapologetically Deathretro, the band’s latest five-track EP, ‘Tape Wyrms’, is a collection of brash-thrash surfer rock with an edgy twist. And I’m delighted to have it as the first major review on the site in 2026!
The record opens with ‘Jumped the Shark’, a track that’s already available. So in terms of value for money, you’re getting all new material after this song. Neat. The tune’s dark yet delicious, and leads so well into the rest of the offering. You’re certainly hungry for more by this point, and dinner is well and truly served.
‘Ants’ runs to a gentler pace, letting solid drumming underpin the somewhat quirky melody. The vocals are fairly monotone, though a story develops lyrically. It’s got an even darker element further in, though, which creates a really eerie atmosphere through the scuzzy effects overlaid.
My favourite? ‘The God Particle’. It’s more uptempo and intense, with punkier sensibilities and a really frenzied feeling. It also seems more nostalgic than the others, yet it’s eligible for energetic cardio gym playlists. I’m a big fan of the solo six-string work, too.
A haunting sound with jaunty, offset words gives ‘Dog Leg’ another style still, and the finale, ‘Buried With Statues’, introduces some synths and more bass, for good measure. So, all in all, you’ve got here a seriously rounded EP fit for headbangers looking to get their year off to a meaty start. ‘Tape Wyrms’? More like earworms.
