Wolforna, The Blind Pig

For rockers, music heads, pint swiggers and so on, Sowerby Bridge’s The Blind Pig is a cracking spot. Offering free entry to gigs hosted on Fridays and Saturdays, and open mics on Sunday, it’s the ideal, buzzing venue for discovering new talent — totally fitting for a Wolforna headliner, with support from Chiang.

The quirky gaff — adorned with disco balls, pop art-style posters and neon signage — has screens downstairs televising the acts, for those who consider it too ear-blistering upstairs. The sort of place where the floor shakes and the bass rattles and rumbles through you. And let’s not forget the array of shots available — hello, baby Guinness! A fantastic setup that leaves you pondering, “what more could you want?”. Plus, they look after the bands so well. A treat for all involved.

Five-piece heavy rockers Chiang opened proceedings and they immediately set the room ablaze. Everyone was locked in, and a few moshers had gathered down the front in no time. Their show consisted mostly of romping, shredding belters, plus a newer track to test on a fresh crowd. The verdict? A ripper.

And their closing piece was a cover of Queens of the Stone Age’s ‘Feel Good Hit Of The Summer’ — covered excellently. One last blast of energy before they downed tools.

Wolforna always hook your attention throughout. They’ve just got that secret sauce, and the Sowerby punters were lapping it up. In just under an hour, they’d gifted us the stellar new, somewhat dancey single, ‘Two 2nd Rule’, interspersed with the full ‘Tales of the Damned’ EP. Transitions were flawless and even improv drumming made ‘Chains’ pop even more. This band had no qualms in pushing the sound that bit further, to lay on even more of a performance. Naturally, ‘Break You’ reinvigorated the room after a long spell of chugging riffs, then before we knew it, ‘Boneman’, their upcoming new single (out 7th November), was their finale.

The ‘War Pigs’ cover they’ve utterly nailed also saw its way into the setlist — a tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne, which was so well-received. And what better venue to roll out some pigs? Nicely done.
