Shamefully, despite the Aussie band having been on the scene since 2017 (not about to start rapping here), I only came across Spacey Jane this year. It was when they released the first single from their campaign ahead of their third studio album*. The scuzzy, rocky riffs of ‘All the Noise’ initially clued me into the outfit, but now, following the drop of ‘If That Makes Sense’, there are so many high-quality, super-classy bops to take a bite out of as well. Yearning and explorative, this is confirmation in aural form that good things certainly do come in threes.
The 13-tracker is ultimately shoegazy, electronic indie, for fans of acts such as Palace and Lime Cordiale. And although sonically upbeat, it’s also considered the band’s most ambitious collection to date. Need further convincing? You shouldn’t, but just to seal the deal, it was produced by Mike Crossey, whose credentials span the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Wolf Alice. Pretty whopping.
The album kicks into touch with the atmospheric yet vibey ‘Intro’, which perfectly tees up ‘Through My Teeth’. This single’s been such a firm favourite that it tipped the scales in favour of me simply having to review the full record. No-brainier, for sure, as it’s such a gorgeous tune — and set of tunes, in fact.
Afterwards, the wistful ‘Whateverrrr’ further evidences that this group’s sound could’ve nestled them well into 2010’s gentle indie-rock movement, with uptempo yet mellow blushes on ‘Impossible to Say’. Following the mood, ‘How to Kill Houseplants’ is also deliriously laidback.
Fancy a dance? The grooviest bop, ‘So Much Taller’, is designed to get you on your feet instantly. It’s reflective but cucumber-cool and probably my top recommendation for what to spin first, if you’re after a ripper. But you should already be getting a solid sense that this is wall-to-wall audible joy right here.
Gentle strings lay claim to the pacy ‘Estimated Delivery’, while its lyrics are open, raw and honest. Then the melancholy fades back in on ‘August’ to round everything off.
They’ve got a beast of a tour coming up over the latter half of 2025, so be sure to catch Spacey Jane if you can! You’re bound to absorb ‘If That Makes Sense’ into your summer playlists long before then, too.
If you only download one track, let it be: ‘So Much Taller’
