‘Night After Night’ — The Amazons — Single review

It’s finally here; not only the piece of new material The Amazons have had up their sleeve for ages (certainly since I saw them in Hull, 2023), but their real heavy-rock resurgence bid. Given that ‘Night After Night’ has been quietly on the radars of fans over the past year or so, I’d posit these fellas had deliberately left this sweet, sweet tune ’til the last of the pre-album singles. And like its repetitively named title suggests, you’ll be playing it on loop imminently, like me (and the obviously teed-up BBC Radio 1 tastemaker, Jack Saunders).

I was going to channel all my energy into crafting a stellar review of The Amazons’ fourth studio album, ‘21st Century Fiction’, when it lands on 9th May. That’s still the plan, except I lost the fight with the urge to save my thoughts about this recent single until then.

In short: it’s a bloody banger. Through grittier undertones, chugging riffs and a skin-searing solo, the guitars alone re-establish them firmly as a fierce alt rock outfit to rival them all. Less new-age Royal Blood (despite their collaborations), more OG The Amazons who wrote the blistering ‘In My Mind’.

The storytelling navigates a habitual journey, and one that hooks you quickly lyrically. But the same can be said of the pulsating, almost electronic start and angelic backing. That completely sets the pace, and you’ll find it a mainstay throughout — instrumentally, and cleverly, reinforcing its themes of repetition. Again, that’s just like the name, too. Slick. Then, there’s no escaping the thundering lead hook that guides you from verse to chorus and back. And of course, later, you’re treated to fancy fretwork, a bombastic finale (I’m detecting with the help of brass) and signature guest vocals from Ella McRobb (who, I suppose, is really no longer just a guest).

Another triumph? Definitely. Uber-cool artwork to match? You’ve got it. A total excitement-builder? Oh, absolutely. Not as though they intended that at all…
