I saved the joy of hearing ‘Living A Lie’, the long-awaited, brand-new track from The Amazons, for my flight home from Greece. And it was worth it.
A barrage of strings ascends as ethereal, eerie female vocals (courtesy of Ella McRobb) ring the song in. It’s the first offering from The Amazons since their 2022 album, ‘How Will I Know If Heaven Will Find Me?’ and the departure of their drummer, so there was an expectation of big things. But a biblical comeback with theatrics in all the right places is confirmed here, and it’s as though they’ve secured the ultimate walk-on music in turn. It’s no wonder my warm skin couldn’t fight back the goosebumps.
They’ve built up a wanting, expectant fanbase that’s been crying out for something massive from the band. ‘Living A Lie’ is immediately striking and completely different to anything they’ve gifted us before, so they’ve more than delivered.
Overall, there’s something quite mystical about it. I’d go as far as to say it deserves to soundtrack an otherworldly film epic, too, as it’s quite simply grander than just a new belter from the Berkshire rockers. They’ve gone down the same sort of direction as Royal Blood — i.e. less so the core, heavy rock, and more the modern guitar wizardry.
The slapping of electronically charged bass strings and drums is exceptional. Those drums suddenly get very dancey at 3:04, and we’re treated to a yearning, aching solo, too. Then, while the song fades out, it has the sort of abrupt end that suggests more is to come. Plus, the artwork just happens to be effortlessly cool; like an old, dusted-off novel found on a table.
More tunes? An album? A tour? Ready for it all now!
