I’ve seen Pop Vulture live before, at none other than Hyde Park Book Club. The band were raucous at the below-stairs venue, and very much showcased that they’re dynamic, fun and not afraid of a cowbell. So when Hanglands got in touch about their brand-new EP, giving it a whirl and putting pen to paper was a no-brainer*…
‘Another Success’ is a brilliantly bold, slightly chest-puffy name for an EP — kudos to the quad for picking it. The Leeds-based DIY outfit have released the seven-tracker with Come Play With Me Records and EMI North; another exciting step forward for the two adjoined bodies. And let’s not forget that Pop Vulture have been adding to their CV by gigging with Yard Act and English Teacher.
Eclectic instrumentals, unconventional post-punk and lyrics that portray an almost abstract stream of consciousness underpin it all. Traversing themes of frustration with Britain offset by soul-searching narratives, it’s quite the collection of tunes. The ticking, tapping ‘Intro’ sets a solid pace for ‘Comforting Lie’, a fragmented, jaunty number that’s super-catchy in its lead riff. And as it builds, it becomes frantic in parts, with what must be the token toots of a trumpet.
‘Blister’ puts forward guitars and drums in excellent synchronicity, with jarring, spoken yet echoey, harmonised lyrics. Meanwhile, the bombastic ‘Left For Dead’ is a quirky monologue with sounds you’d imagine suiting a Sci-Fi game.
There’s a seemingly random flurry of spoken words in ‘Dog’, which, once more, harnesses those jangly, out-of-kilter guitars. You do, however, get some chanting vocals about two minutes in. By contrast, then, ‘Demob Happy’ is a bit gentler, before the finale, ‘Self Help’, hits. This is a piece furnished with many similarities to ‘Comforting Lie’; something that rather nicely ties the lot together.
So if you’re after some boogie-worthy, alternative vibes this summer, Pop Vulture have just the answer. Play ‘Another Success’ now.

*With thanks to Hanglands for the advanced stream.
