‘Live from the Carron Bothy’ — Last Boy — EP review

Armed with firewood, his guitar, a friend and some recording equipment, Scotland’s Last Boy put together what you’re about to agree will be the most wholesome EP of the year.

‘Live from the Carron Bothy’ is the artist’s first official release of its kind. The set of four songs from the former frontman of The Ninth Wave is delivered in a fashion true to each piece’s times-gone-by roots, and from a pure, acoustic environment. As they were designed to be played in a way reminiscent of how they’d have been sung originally, in small pubs, you’re in for a goosebump-inducing, soul-warming treat.

The EP was recorded live in a bothy within a glen between Inveraray and Lochgilphead, in Argyll. The River Add — a place where the singer-songwriter recalls that he spent some of the best days of his childhood — flows beside, so it was the ideal location.

Since getting out on the gigging circuit solo, Haydn’s been playing more and more traditional songs, “reimagining them in [his] own style with tape loops and different arrangements”. Knowing that, it makes sense that this quartet of calming yet emotive tracks should be curated into an EP format. And to almost literally paint a picture of the recording experience, there’s an 18-minute film to accompany the music.

Prepare to feel very much acquainted with ‘The Boatman’s Cure’, ‘Little Pink’, ‘The Dowie Dens o’Yarrow’ and ‘The Boy With Blood On His Hands’. The latter’s Haydn’s very own bothy-esque ballad, while the opener was something he first heard in Dublin last year and couldn’t wait to learn and play. It was a gentle reminder that music used to be shared to one another via performing in pubs or other face-to-face situations, rather than simply being devoured on the internet and streaming platforms. It’s that notion that I find so endearing — along with the poetic, delicate vocals and perfectly strummed strings.

To those with tickets to the intimate launch show, I am tremendously jealous. The rest of you, get ‘Live from the Carron Bothy’ flickering through your headphones immediately.
