‘Amandolyn’/‘Something Missing’ — Wolforna — Double A-side single review

Put down your Argos catalogue, finish that mince pie and crank your speakers up to 11… Wolforna are back. While still rightfully brandishing their ‘Track of the Week’ accolade from BBC Radio 1’s Rock Show, after the release of their last tune, ‘22 Degrees & Sunny’, the Bradford rockers are generously gifting us not one but two new singles before Christmas. And believe me, you’ll need to bench Slade while you get very, very accustomed to playing ‘Amandolyn’ and ‘Something Missing’.

Initially, Wolforna had planned to release ‘Amandolyn’ on its lonesome. The lively fluidity to its melody has meant they’ve injected their repertoire with a more upbeat follow-up to their last, but for me, it was equally as obvious a choice for their next single as ‘Something Missing’. So it’s great to see them setting their first double A-side loose.

While they weren’t designed as co-pilots or siblings, these singles do possess some slightly similar — or at least complementary — qualities; ‘Amandolyn’ documents the turmoil an artist faces in trying to realise their inner thoughts as a finished, physical article. And, as you might decipher, ‘Something Missing’ isn’t a far cry away thematically, as it navigates the figuring out of what others are doing wrong, in order to get it right yourself. Between the two, I’d posit there’s a whole lot of lyrical exploration that borders on the perfection-seeking.

I’ll tell you what is perfect, for certain: the unity between guitars, bass and drums on both records. This band is tight, tight, tight in everything they do — I even heard Tigercub’s frontman tell them words to that effect recently. Every riff and drum thump is polished and refined, yet they’ve cleverly implemented some slick breaks and vocal effects to raise their game once more. These may not be their grittiest, but their famously enticing, absorbing vocal clarity is as on-point as always.

These riffy, anthemic crowd-pleasers are about to propel Wolforna into an even brighter 2024, so wrap your ears around the tunes ASAP.
